About Us

1. Project Origin:

Publicity

The FE Multi-faith Chaplaincy Training Project has its origin in conversations between members of the FE Chaplains’ Support Group in the Diocese of Bristol in which concerns were expressed about the sustainability of the large increase in FE chaplaincy provision since 2006/7.

The group identified ‘chaplain succession’ as a major source of fragility in sustaining the current level of multi-faith chaplaincy presence in FE Colleges and seeks to encourage those wishing to explore chaplaincy work in this large and vibrant sector of education by offering a series of readily available training opportunities.

2. Project Description:

Two distinct sets of training materials have been developed:-

1. Free, on-line training – Four courses, directed towards the recruitment of new FE college chaplains:

  • Course A: Further Education, Multi-faith Chaplaincy and Me (an introductory over-view of the sector, the work, and personal qualities involved).
  • Course B: The Chaplain (examples of the ‘hands-on’ work of FE chaplains, with comment and reflection from serving chaplains).
  • Course C: Chaplaincy Nuts & Bolts (How to get things done in an FE College setting/ administrative tasks/ accountability/ etc).

The three coursed above are studied and assessed on-line at the student’s own pace. On completion, the student may progress to course D.

  • Course D: See For Yourself (This is the student placement component of the training, during which the student is expected to spend between 30 to 60 hours at a college following a programme of activities arranged by the placement supervisor – usually a member of the college chaplaincy team).

2. ‘Sustaining Chaplaincy’ – A text-based training manual primarily directed towards placement students and serving chaplains at the start of their college ministry.
The full text of Sustaining Chaplaincy (2014) may be viewed online.
Sustaining Chaplaincy is stylistically similar to, and builds upon ‘Welcome to Chaplaincy’, published jointly by >lsc and fbfe in 2008.
